The Job Search

Job searching is both an art and a science, one that requires time, planning, preparation, and a lot of brain power.

At its simplest, the job search is “the act of seeking or obtaining employment,” which should encompass all reasonable job search initiatives.

Job searching includes making contact with potential employers by telephone, in person, via the Internet, submitting resumes or e-mail applications to apply for job openings and/or vacancies, and interviewing for jobs.

At a higher level, the executive job search will be for senior-level and executive positions across the public and private sectors, as well as non-profit organizations.

The elements of an effective executive-level job search are very different than what may be utilized for non-executive roles.

The three channels of activity that drive any effective executive job search are networking, targeted direct outreach and executive search firms.

Many executives have not had to search for a new role in decades, leaving them unfamiliar with the new recruiting ecosystem.

In today’s dynamic and competitive job market there are numerous factors contributing to force a much higher rate of both voluntary and involuntary job changes for the organisational executive. Among those factors are outright job elimination, lack of promotional opportunities, plus the need for more varied functional exposure.

Job movement, whether voluntary or involuntary, is increasingly a way of life in the corporate world. Therefore, it has become clear that one skill area in which every upwardly mobile executive needs to become proficient is job search. More and more, executives must count on job hunting skills as the vehicle for driving their career forward.

Now, more than ever, executives need to view job-hunting skills as essential “life skills” that are necessary for employment survival and career ascension. Furthermore, these same basic job-hunting skills are also vital to successfully compete for those desirable internal lateral assignments and projects that can enhance one’s visibility and general management qualifications.

In seeking to discover what organisations see as essential traits, characteristics and skills that are vital for modern business success, a survey was conducted by Beatty & Burkholder, authors of Executive Career Guide for MBAs:

Each of the six areas above have been highlighted by survey results as being critical to executive job search success, and a necessity for executives to focus upon from their resume, cover letter through to their interview.
