  • The Job Offer

Never, under any circumstances, accept the job offer right away, even if the offer is better than anticipated. Take time to thoroughly evaluate the offer.

  • What is it?

A job offer is an invitation for a potential employee to work in a specific position for an employer. Job offers typically contain the details of the employment offer, including salary, benefits, job responsibilities, and the reporting manager's name and title. The offer letter may also cover the expected work hours, the desired start date, and additional details that are important for the prospective employee to know.

Job offers are made by employers when hiring and include key details about the job, compensation, and benefits. They can be delivered verbally or in writing, and employees can respond by accepting the offer, declining the offer, or negotiating the terms of the offer.

    What is it's importance?

There are pros and cons to every job.

The key to evaluating a job offer is to make sure you have all the key information to make an informed decision about whether the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa.

Accepting a job offer and making a commitment to an organization is a monumental decision. Taking the time to be thoughtful about this decision, ensures common mistakes are avoided in the following areas:

    Job title

    Job description

    Starting date

    Work schedule

    Reporting structure

    Salary (Compensation Bonus or Commission)

    Paid time off

    Employee benefits

    Privacy policies

    Termination conditions

According to John Lees, the UK-based career strategist and author of The Success Code, “you have more leverage” to shape your job description and improve your salary and benefits package “right after you are made an offer than you do in your first two years of employment.”

    What are the key areas/principles?

    • Salary. How does your salary compare to the industry average for the role and location?
    • Technical fit. To what extent do your strengths, needs and experience match the job?
    • Job content. How much job satisfaction will you derive? What benchmarks will you be judged against?
    • Cultural fit. How do your values, beliefs and conduct align with that of the hiring organisation?
    • Perks and benefits. Executive-level roles are renowned for their generous compensation packages. Does yours deliver?
    • Work-life balance. Switching off is essential for work-life balance. How flexible are the company?

    Self-coaching Questions

    1. Am I excited about the job?
    2. Does the organization’s mission and values align with my own?
    3. Is there room to grow?
    4. How much money would make me happy?
    5. What compromises can I accept?
    6. How do I expect to feel at the end of my work days?
    7. How will I measure success?
